Chester Zoo, Chester

George Mottershead opened the zoo for the first time in 1931 and in 1934 the zoo was established as a conservation charity. Chester Zoo is operated by the North of England Zoological Society. Mottershead wanted to build a zoo without the traditional iron bars to cage the animals. The original Oakfield house itself and stable block are both Grade II listed.
Our Zoo is a six-part BBC drama based on the charming story of George Mottershead and his family.
